Lipaemia retinalis in a 29-day-old infant with type 1 hyperlipoproteinaemia.

چکیده
A 29-day-old infant born of consanguineous parents had type 1 hyperlipoproteinaemia associated with lipaemia retinalis. Biochemical analyses disclosed hypertriglyceridaemia, hyperchylomicronaemia, and lipoprotein lipase deficiency. Ophthalmoscopically all retinal vessels had the creamy appearance of lipaemia retinalis. The plasma lipoprotein levels and fundus condition became normal after her ingestion of fat was limited. To our knowledge this is the youngest patient reported with type 1 hyperlipoproteinaemia associated with lipaemia retinalis.

Lipaemia of the limbal vessels.
A rise in the plasma triglycerides above a certain level imparts a milky opalescence to the plasma. This is termed lipaemia. Like other lipids the triglycerides are transported in the bloodstream within lipid-protein complexes, the plasma lipoproteins. Triglyceride of dietary origin is carried in the large lipoprotein particles called chylomicrons, while that synthesized within the body is carr...

Fyfe, W. M., Hall, Margaret S., and Scott, Janet W. (1970). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 45, 84 Lipaemia retinalis in untreated diabetes mellitus. A 6-year-old girl developed diabetes mellitus, with marked hyperlipaemia and lipaemic retinalis, both of which rapidly cleared after insulin treatment. Biochemical studies led to the conclusion that dietary fat was the chief source of the excess...
متن کاملIdiopathic Lipaemia Retinalis.
LIPAEMIA is described by Duke-Elder (1940) as a condition wherein fat in an emulsified form is present in the blood to a degree which alters its appearance. On the evidence available at the time of writing he added that, with one exception-the case of Wagener (1922)-diabetes was the only reported disease wherein the condition became sufficiently marked to be seen ophthalmoscopically in the reti...
متن کاملEffects of experimental hyperlipoproteinaemia on the retina and optic nerve in rhesus monkeys.
Hyperlipoproteinaemia resulting from thyroid suppression and long-term ingestion of a high cholesterol diet caused prolonged lipaemia retinalis in 6 rhesus monkeys. No atherosclerotic deposits or other ophthalmoscopically visible changes of the retinal vasculature were detectable. In 2 animals histopathological examination revealed segmental atrophy and gliosis of the optic nerves bearing a res...
متن کاملLipemia retinalis in a 35-day-old infant with hyperlipoproteinemia: case report.
A rare case of hyperlipropoteinemia in a 35-day-old infant who presented not only high blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides but also an ocular manifestation described as lipemia retinalis. The fundoscopic abnormality cleared as the levels of chilomicrons in plasma dropped. Lipemia retinalis is an important and reliable parameter of high levels of chilomicrons and triglycerides and shou...
